More information : (SS26202435) Hartland [NAT] (1)
Hartland was granted to the Dynham family after the death of William 1. Oliver de Dynham created a borough at Hartland c1290, having obtained (in 1280) the grant of a market and a three-day fair at the feast of St Necta. The town was too far removed from trade routes to come to anything much. In the 18th century, it was described as being as depressed looking as a Cornish borough. Its market ceased about 1780. Nevertheless, the town grew steadily in numbers until the 1840's, and then began to decline (2)
A castle was licenced at Hartland in 1201. (3) |
