More information : TF 086787 (centred). Site of the previously unlocated deserted settlement of Helethorpe, documented by name from 1212 to as late as 1711. Earthworks on the site are recorded on early APs (a) but were subsequently destroyed. In plan they formed a rectangular block that might be either a single large demesne farm or a small settlement. The ditched and embanked arrangement of the whole may argue for the former. The site appears to have been inserted into an arable field system at the junction of several furlongs. Field-walking in 1977 produced pottery of the 12th to early 15th centuries but no later. In one area was a very large and dense scatter of tile of shelly fabric, which could indicate manufacture on the site. (1-2)
The Medieval and Post Medieval settlement of Helethorpe was visible as earthworks on early photographs, but levelled and visible as cropmarks on later photographs and mapped. (Morph No. LI.541.3.1-3)
