More information : Site of DMV of Hallington is mentioned in Domesday. (1)
The possible remians of the Medieval settlement, referred to by authority 1, were seen as earthworks around the village of Hallington, and mapped from good quality air photographs. Remains of tofts, with crofts to their rear, are visible flanking the stream which extends east from Hallington. These cover an area 450m by 300m, centred at TF 3076 8561. The possible remains of at least ten buildings are visible as rectangular platforms or embanked enclosures ranging in size from 20m by 12m to 9m by 8m. These are scattered amongst the tofts and crofts, to the north of the stream and are centred at TF 3076 8561, TF 3059 8554, TF 3065 8559, TF 3062 8551, TF 3061 8554, TF 3084 8567, TF 3068 8558, TF 3071 8567, TF 3071 8569, TF 3072 8569. Ridge and furrow is visible as earthworks in two of the crofts centred at TF 3082 8569. A hollow way extends along the back of the crofts, to the south of the stream, centred at TF 3085 8542. Ridge and furrow, still surviving as earthworks on the latest air photographs, is visible north east and east of the tofts and crofts, centred at TF 3125 8596 and TF 3101 8570. Field boundaries, part of a field system associated with the settlement, extend to the north east and are centred at TF 3143 8592. Less coherent settlement remains are visible amongst the present properties of Hallington. These parts of possible croft and toft boundaries are centred at TF 3006 8553, TF 3040 8557 and TF 3039 8533. Another area of settlement is visible to the south west of Hallington (see TF 38 NW 42). Some of the crofts have been ploughed and are now visible as cropmarks. (Morph No. LI.198.8.1-15)
