Ponds

Hob Uid: 893252
Location :
Lincolnshire
East Lindsey
Burwell
Grid Ref : TF3585079300
Summary : Thought to be Post Medieval formal garden (ornamental pond, mound, boundaries and enclosure), seen as earthworks, associated with the now demolished Burwell Hall. But may also have been the carp ponds associated with Burwell Priory.
More information : TF 3610 7925. Earthworks previously associated with the demolished
Burwell Hall. An ornamental pond and associated formal garden
earthworks, probably of the 17th/18th century are clearly shown on
APs (a). (1-2)

The Post Medieval formal garden remains referred to by the previous
authorities was seen as earthworks and mapped from good quality air
photographs. The ornamental pond is rectilinear, has five sides,
measures 170m by 80m, and appears to be divided into two parts.
The western part has an island in the middle and is centred at
TF 3610 7926. Various drains or boundaries extend from the south
west corner of the pond. Possibly associated with the garden is a
ditch defined rectangular enclosure, measuring 70m by 65m, centred
at TF 3585 7930. To the west of this, and West of Manor Farm, are
parallel bank defined boundaries which extend north south for 400m,
and could be associated garden features. They are centred at
TF 3556 7926. (Morph No. LI.85.4.1-5)

This description has been generated from the RCHME MORPH2 database.

The ponds are more likely to be the former carp ponds of the Burwell Priory, which lay just north of the site (under what is now Priory farm). It was built in 1100 by Benedictine monks and dissolved 1427. (4)
