Thonock

Hob Uid: 891769
Location :
Lincolnshire
West Lindsey
Thonock
Grid Ref : SK8319092760
Summary : Medieval settlement known from documentary evidence but the exact whereabouts is unknown. Probable Medieval or Post Medieval boundaries seen as cropmarks could indicate the site.
More information : SK 828928. The DMV of Thonock represents an unresolved problem.
Conventionally listed as a DMV and assigned a possible location (a),
it has not been confirmed by field evidence. A settlement is
documented in 1086, as a member of Gainsborough in the early 14th
century, and as a small settlement, including Havercroft - SK 89 SW 5
in the later 14th, 15th and even 16th century taxation returns. In
the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries High and Low (Nether) Thonock are
referred to. Early APs may record a hollow way and closes near
Laundry Cottages (SK 831928). (1) The ploughed-out hollow way comes
in from the east - SK 8319 9278 to SK 8344 9286 (b). (1)

No extensive remains of the Medieval settlement referred to by the
previous authorities were visible on the available air photographs.
Probable Medieval boundaries visible as earthworks near Laundry
Cottages could indicate the possible site of the settlement. No
crofts or tofts are identifiable so it is not certain if this is the
area of Medieval settlement. The boundaries have been ploughed flat
and are now visible as cropmarks centred at SK 8319 9276 and
SK 8301 9276. The supposed hollow way when seen as an earthwork on
earlier photography (it is a cropmark on source 1b) looks more like a
Post Medieval field boundary alongside a furrow.
