More information : Cropmarks of a Prehistoric/Roman triple linear boundary appears on APs on the Jurassic alignment from Stubton at SK 8839 4909 with a change of direction at SK 885493 continuing NE into Hough on the Hill to Caythorpe at SK 8969 5014. (1-2)
The Prehistoric or Roman triple ditched boundary or dyke referred to by the previous authority was seen as cropmarks and mapped from good quality air photographs. It is visible for 1800m from SK 8987 5034 to SK 8939 4909. In the northernmost part of the dyke a fourth ditch is sometimes visible. The only major section where the dyke is not visible on the air photographs is where it passes through a wood. A branch, also triple ditched, extends east from the dyke for 170m, and is centred at SK 8970 4987. A number of enclosures are visible adjacent to the dyke (see SK 84 NE 8, 9) but any possible association between these and the dyke is not clear from air photographs alone. (Morph No. LI.716.13.1)
This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database. (3)
Recent cropmark photography reveals an extension to the dyke/boundary recorded above. At SK 8850 4925, the dyke, which is at this point triple-ditched, branches off to the west. The three ditches are visible only for approximately 100m, thereafter only two ditches are clearly visible. This double-ditched part of the dyke is one and the same as that recorded separately as SK 84 NE 15. In addition, a very small section (c.20m) of what is possibly a further branch of triple- ditched dyke is visible at SK 8827 4920. (4-4a) |
