More information : 'This French privateer chased the FANNY, Captain Blakeley, for 11 hours until the Englishmen decoyed the enemy vessel over the Goodwin Sands where it stranded and went to pieces. Thirteen men were saved in two boats. The FANNY went to the aid of the survivors and to his astonishment, [the captain] found amongst them his wife, who had been captured aboard a collier vessel only four days previous.' (1)(3)
'Early in 1747 a collier was taken by the Frenchman as a prize off the coast of Kent...four days later she sighted the FANNY and gave chase. Capt. Blakeley evaded capture...finally taking his ship clean over the Goodwins at high water. In close pursuit the Frenchman followed him, became stranded and was finally wrecked. Only thirteen men from the two crews [of the privateer and collier] on board escaped...' (2)
