More information : (Area: TF621206.) The northern side of King's Lynn was defended by an earth bank and ditch called `The Loke'. It is now filled in and impossible to date.(1) (From authies. 2-4, it appears that The Loke was an independent ovate earthwork rather than a mere bank and ditch, bounded on the South by Fisher Fleet, and on the North by an artificial (?) ditch and bank. It could have been Medieval, Elizabethan, or Civil War, and was certainly used in the last, as 2 and 3 depict bastions on the North side. It is perhaps likely to have been Elizabethan, since it is North of Fisher Fleet, which was presumably (?) the Medieval boundary, and was plainly superceded by the main Civil War defences in its area.)
There are no physical remains of The Loke on the suggested course of the defences. The line, which is quite flat, is now occupied by C19th tenements and a modern trading estate. The only open space, the Recreation Ground, appears never to have been built upon, is level, showing no evidence of earlier earthworks. The sites of the Civil War (?) bastions cannot be determined on the ground.(5)
