Town wall from Purfleet to Kettle Mill. A stone wall of relatively poor workmanship, first erected in the C12th,(4), or C14th,(3), and often repaired later, with the town ditch outside it. It protected the Newland part of King's Lynn, and was a continuation Northwards of the earthworks which protected Bishop's Lynn. It was crenellated, and almost entire up to 1800, when the southern part was destroyed during railway construction. See map diagram.(3-6)
For details of the surviving sections of the wall, including those sections to the South as far as TF622191, published by the OS as `Town Wall' or `Town Wall (course of)', see special 25".(7) Kettlewell Lane. Length of town wall, probably associated with murage grants of 1266. Limestone, brick, and carstone. The West side has a section of brick, stilted arches, restored in the C20th, opening into small chambers. The East side retains ashlar built buttresses. Blocked arrow slits at intervals. This section is Scheduled: Norf No.174a. Littleport Terrace. Length of town wall probably built under a murage grant of 1266 associated with the East Gate, breached in 1277, and probably rebuilt under murage grants of 1294 and 1300. Randomly coursed carstone and ashlar blocks with ashlar arrow slits to the East side, a series of depressed relieving arches to the West side, which were once open. Scheduled: Norf No.237. Both sections are Grade II*.(8)
