More information : (SJ49801245) Site of Gatehouse [GT].(1) The principal gatehouse of Shrewsbury Abbey was an embattled tower of two or more storeys, flanked, probably at the angles, with small square or octagonal turrets. The tower contained a room for the porter, and there were one or two rooms over the arch, one of which was probably a small oratory. Buck's view of it in 1731 is mentioned as showing half of the capacious arch, deeply recessed with ribs.(2)
The site of the gatehouse is occupied by a metalled surface and lawn. (3) |
