Summary : Medieval Borough, founded in 1194. By 1238 it was represented as a borough by its own jury at the eyre. Besides the royal manor, there were 13 minor manors around Plympton during the Mediaeval period. The nucleus of the town was the burh created by Edward the Elder between 899 and 1010 (SX55NW55). By 904, a minster, later College of secular canons had been created, which was replaced by an Augustinian monastery in 1121, in time becomimg the second richest monastery in Devon (SX55NW4). |
