More information : NY 994135 Excavation in 1980 uncovered Roman walls, the remains of a circular building and some paving which may have been associated with this building. The pottery uncovered seems to date mainly from the second and third centuries. Small finds such as brooches, dress fasteners and a scabbard chape were also recovered. It would appear that a portion of the vicus underlies the area between Back Lane and Front Street at Bowes. (1)
Additional reference (2)
Investigation of the vicus, 122 m E of Bowes Roman Fort, revealed a road, 3.5m wide, with side gullies, and evidence of timber buildings. (3)
It would be reasonable to suspect that the vicus of the fort at Bowes would lie mainly to the E and W, but these areas are occupied by modern housing or the remains of Medieval tofts and ridge and furrow, and nothing survives above ground. A local informant, Mr M Branthwaite, located the 1966 excavations to NY 9945 1345, now occupied by the bungalow Giverny, and the adjoining property Grey Dykes at NY 9842 1346 overlays the site of the 1980 excavation.
