Hallgarth

Hob Uid: 875615
Location :
Cumbria
South Lakeland
Kendal
Grid Ref : SD5080094220
Summary : Hallgarth or Round Hill is the possible site of a pre-Conquest administrative centre or burh of Stirkland. It is hill with steep sides and possible fortifications. However, there is some debate to whether the site is natural or man made or even altered by man. The name `Round Hill' is often given to similar man-made sites. However, it has been suggested that the garth (enclosure) actually refers to the nearby Helsfell Hall.
More information : SD 50809422 Round Hill, Hallgarth. A clearly man-adapted mound with steep sides and a level summit, identified as a possible burh of the pre-Conquest territorial unit of Stirkland. (1)

It has been suggested that the site referred to as 'garth' may infact relate to the nearby Helsfell Hall. (2)
