Summary : The site of a mound of unknown date. It was once known locally as 'Ice Hill', although it is thought unlikely to have been an ice house as there is no house of the right date located nearby. It is surrounded on two sides by a water filled ditch although there are apparently four ditches in total, and bordered just to the north by a pit. In 1935 some beams were found close the surface of the mound, and based on this and subsequent interpretation it is possible the mound is a former mill mound. |
More information : TM06869170 The Excavation Index records that a mound of uncertain date was excavated at this location in 1935 (1)
The mound was known locally as Ice Hill in the mid 20th century, but it is thought unlikely that this was an ice house as no house of the right date or size lies nearby. It was also thought possible at one point that it could be Roman. In 1935 wooden beams were found close to the surface of the mound. It is now thought possible that the mound represents all that is left of a former mill. Four ditches around the mound in 1994 are thought to have acted as drainage, and a 3 metre diameter, 1.5 metre deep pit in the top of the mound is probably evidence of the 1935 excavation. (2) |
