More information : (SP76671107) St Peter and St Paul's Church [NAT].(1) Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, built of coursed shaley rubble with stone dressings. The walls of the nave, tower and aisle are almost entirely covered with cement. The roof of the chancel is tiled, while those of the nave and aisle are covered with lead. A church existed on the site in ca.1140 for the South doorway is of that date, and the wall above the South arcade of the nave may be part of the original building. The chancel was rebuilt and enlarged ca.1230, the South aisle and arcade were built ca.1240, when the C12th door was moved to its present position where it may have formed the outer entrance to a C13th porch, incorporated in the aisle in the C15th. The existence of the porch is also indicated by the differences of level in the floor of the aisle. The North wall of the nave was rebuilt at the end of the C15th. The South aisle was widened and the West tower added in the first half of the C15th, when the C13th West doorway was reused in the West wall of the tower. The South porch was added late in the C15th or early in the C16th. In 1868, the church was completely restored and the chancel lengthened about 9 feet towards the East. The South doorway is a fine example of C12th work; the carving on the tympanum and lintel, with inscription, are especially interesting.(2) Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The South doorway of ca.1140 is a splendid Romanesque work of three orders. The lintel is carved with a dragon and St Michael, the tympanum with a tree and monsters eating apples. Above the lintel is a Latin inscription. Grade I.(3) The inscription on the lintel is recorded. The font appears to be a C14th recut of a C12th cup-shaped bowl on a wide circular moulded base.(4) Additional reference.(5) |
