Summary : Church, formerly east appendix to nun's church of Swine Priory (TA13NW1). Built circa 1180, with alterations in the early 14th and 15th century, the west tower was rebuilt in 1787, and the porch and vestry were added in the 19th century. The church is built of magnesian limestone ashlar with Welsh slate roof. Three-stage, west tower, 4-bay nave with clerestory, aisles and south porch, single-bay chancel with south vestry and north aisle chapel. |
More information : (TA 13433582) St. Mary's Church (C of E) (NAT) (1) A Church of St. Mary Parish Church. The E. part of the priory church of a house of Cistercian nuns founded c.1153. Formerly cruciform, it dates from the C12 and there are N. and S. arcades of 5 bays with circular columns and scalloped capitals. C12-C13 clerestorey. The N. aisle was widened in the C16 for the Hilton Chapel which has a fine carved screen of C.1531. Great E. window of chancel of 7 lights covers most of E. wall and dates from C16. W. tower rebuilt in 1787 and has embattled parapet and corner pinnacles. The important fittings include some fine C14 alabastor tombs with effigies in the Hilton chapel, remains of a C14 chancel screen, carved pulpit dated 1619, & C16 chancel stalls with misericords, C18 'gothic' front.(2)
