DESCRIPTION

The site of a Medieval ferry which crossed the Humber from Barton to Hessle. First recorded in 1086, this ferry site was still in operation in 1856 having been superseded in 1855 by a regular daily carrier service until 1956 and an intermittent carrier service up until 1958.

Medieval ferry across the Humber from Barton [TA 0288 2348] to Hessle [TA 0350 2560]. (1)

The Barton Ferry, mentioned in Domesday, was still in operation
in 1856. A charter of 1281 laid down that the ferry serve either
Hessle or Hull. (2)

In 1855 the ferry as such came to an end and was superseded by a regular daily carrier service until 1956 and an intermittent
carrier service to 1958. Since then there has been no service. (3)
