More information : Carthusian Priory, 1378 A.D. [TA 0988 2933] (1)
Founded in 1377 for a prior and 12 monks, and dissolved in 1539. In 1307, a small secular college was extant, but the priests were quarrelsome and replaced by Franciscan friars until 1365. It was then intended that these should be replaced by Franciscan nuns, but in 1377, the Carthusians occupied the site, until dissolved in 1539. A Maison Dieu for thirteen poor men and thirteen poor women was dependent on the priory for a time. (2)
At the Dissolution, the site occupied three acres. It is not known when it was demolished, but it certainly did not survive the siege of Hull of 1643. The last remnant, the East Gate, is said to have been demolished in 1805. (3) |
