More information : (centred NT 889 287) Cultivation Terraces (OE) (Twice) (1)
These cultivation terraces occupy an extensive are a of south and
south-east slopes. They vary in width from 10.0m to 25.0m with the
level working width varying from 8.0m to 12.0m.
Where the terraces merge with the more level ground they sometimes
continue as ridge and furrow ploughing 8.0m to 10.0m wide. This
ridge and furrow differs from that usual in the region in that it
is wider and follows the contours. The narrower and comparatively
modern ploughing follows the slope and is usually for drainage
purposes.
The wider ridge and furrow is usually associated with
mediaeval strip cultivation and it seems probable that this
ploughing and the terraces are of this period and possibly associated
with the depopulated mediaeval village of Hethpool (NT 82 NE 50) (2)
Condition unchanged. (3)
No change. See G.P. (4)
Cultivation terraces were mapped as earthworks visible in lidar south and south-west of White Hill overlooking Elsdon Burn (5). It is possible that these truncated pre-existing terraces when subjected to medieval ploughing as earlier terraces have been identified and mapped on other hillsides in the vicinity as part of the current project. These terraces were mapped as part of the Northern Cheviot Hills Aerial Investigation and Mapping Project.
