Location :
Cheshire East
Lyme Handley
Grid Ref : SJ9645081720
Summary : Four possible bowl barrows in Knightslow Wood, Lyme Park. These have been scheduled as bowl barrows but there is the possibly they may be tree or ornamental mounds forming an extension of tree avenue of the mid-late 17th century formal garden of Lyme Park.

Knightslow Wood. SJ 963818. A possible burial mound. (1)

22581. A bowl barrow located on a gently sloping valley side in
Knightslow Wood. It comprises a circuilar earthen mound 7m in diameter and 0.6m high.

SJ 9644 8158. Western bowl barrow at Knights Low. Scheduled RSM No
22582. In the same location as 22581, it comprises a circular earthen
mound 5m in diameter and up to 0.5m high. (2)

The `bowl barrows' appear to be in pairs and are aligned within Knightslow Wood on the straight avenue of lime trees of the mid - late C17th which extends to the Garden Lake of Lyme Park (a). A north-south straight footpath through the wood also links them with the tree avenue. It seems highly probable that these are tree mounds or ornamental mounds forming an extension of the tree avenue of the mid - late C17th formal garden at Lyme Park (See SJ 98 SE 17). Bronze Age bowl barrows would be generally very rare in this gentle sloping valley environment below the higher dominating moorland. (3)
