SJ 9400 7883. Nab Head bowl barrow. Scheduled RSM No 22573. An oval mound of earth and stones up to 1.8m high with maximum dimensions of 19m by 17m. At its centre is a hollow 4m across and 0.4m deep within which has been placed an OS column. A shallow trench leads to this hollow from the barrow's NW side. A shallow ditch 0.4m wide and 0.2m deep surrounds the barrow on all sides except the W, where it underlies an old field boundary. A berm 3.5m wide separates the barrow mound and its ditch (5).
The Bronze Age bowl barrow and the associated central depression or extractive pit of uncertain date were mapped as part of the Cheshire National Mapping Programme project. The earthworks remain extant on the latest 2010 aerial photography. A second extractive pit of uncertain date appears to have disturbed the south-eastern side of the barrow (6). |
