More information : [SJ 9700 8029] Tumulus situated on the apex of a natural mound known as Reed Hill or Reed's Piece, Sponds Hill. The barrow was surveyed and excavated by W.J. Andrew and others in 1911 who found a primary burial with cist and creamated bones as well as a secondary cist, empty, which probably had contained an urn burial. The barrow had been the subject of an excavation about 100 years earlier (1). Scheduled (2). (1-2) There is no trace of a tumulus on Sponds Hill. The barrow described is on Reed Hill at SJ 977797 (3). A grass covered cairn at SJ 97817984, 14.0m. diam. and 0.8m. high, with an excavation hollow on top. Surveyed at 1/2,500 (4).

SJ 9781 7985. Round cairn on Reed Hill. Scheduled RSM No 23609. A slightly oval-shaped mound of partly turf-covered stones up to 1.4m high with maximum dimensions of 16m x 15m. See [SJ 98 SE 20] for the unexcavated barrows on Sponds Hill (6).
The Bronze Age round cairn was mapped as part of the Cheshire National Mapping Programme project. It is visible as an extant structure with a diameter of 13.7 metres on lidar imagery and the latest 2011 vertical photography (7-8). |
