The South Gate was known as such by the late 14th century, and was called the Green Gate by 1612; both names were still in use in 1674. A passage for pedestrians was made on the west side of the arch in 1723, but the gate was demolished in 1777. (6)
A 1767 sketch of Green Gate in the Wm Salt Library shows the gate as a low stone building pierced by a wide, round-headed arch for vehicles and a small arch on the west side for pedistrians. (7) |
