More information : (SJ92372280) St. Austin's Friary (NR) (Site of) (1)
The only house of Austin Friars in Staffordshire was that in Forebridge, founded in 1344 by Ralph, Lord Stafford. The Pope had given permission in 1343 for a foundation here if twelve friars could be maintained.
Five acres were endowed in the area extending SW from the Green in Forebridge; the street names on that side of Wolverhampton Road preserve its memory.
The house was finally surrendered into the King's hands in 1538. (2-4)
"All over the part occupied now by the modern Territorial Drill hall (named at SJ 92302280 on OS 25" 1923) were dug up many skeletons, showing that this westerly part was probably the cemetery. The other, eastern portion was occupied until recently by the Stafford Brewery". (5) |
