More information : SJ 94590672. Moat (NR) Surveyed at 1:2500 Excavated in 1959 prior to destruction due to redevelopment. Three periods of construction were noted, not very closely dated covering the period 12th century to 1400. The first two phases included timber buildings within the moat and the third included a possible chapel and hall. Now destroyed, covered by a playing field.
This site has now disappeared completely under the play-ground of the village school. It was excavated in 1959 by the Ministry of works. It was approximately 205 ft by 175 ft. A medieval moat probably originally constructed in the 12th century with alterations and strengthening in the 13th century. Probably destroyed by fire in the mid-14th century. No sign of occupation after c.1350. The occupants may have moved to the other moated site in the parish (SJ 90 NW 4). (5)
