Summary : Mottram Old Hall is a multi-period house, built originally as a moated semi-fortified manor house, probably in the 15th century. Only a portion of this house survives, forming the eastern section of the present building. The manor house was altered in the late 15th or early 16th century, when the upper floors were rebuilt in timber framing. In the early 17th century the house was enlarged to form an E-plan structure but part of this building has since been demolished, leaving ranges set around three sides of a small courtyard. Further alterations were carried out during the early 18th century, including some rebuilding work in brick. The house served the manor farm from the mid 18th century until 1922 and was subsequently restored on at least two occasions. |
