More information : [SJ 8916 6965] Old Hall [GT] Tilting Ground [GT] (Remains of) (1) The existing 16th c. Hall, rebuilt in the 18th c., is on the site of a previous house. An earlier hall, perhaps moated, probably existed further north. (2) The N and W fronts of Old Hall are good examples of its period but the remainder has been rebuilt. See G.Ps AO/64/223/3/ & 6. There is no trace of a moat to the north. The so-called tilting ground, and associated earthworks, are apparently no more than ornamental gardening (see SJ 86 NE ) Published survey (25") revised. (3) The Old Hall, Grade 2* (4)
Gawsworth Old Hall is a 15th and 16th century timber-framed house with 19th and 20th century additions. It was orginally quadrangular in plan, but has been reduced to a three-sided courtyard. It may have been constructed on the site of a Medieval moated house. Two to three storeys, timber framed with brick infill and white-wash wattle and daub with a stone slate roof. (1-5)
