Summary : Remains of late 18th century Market Cross, surmounted by a lantern cross of 1820.

Nearly adjacent to the Guildhall is an elegant Stone Cross
surrounded by a flight of steps for the accommodation of the market.

The present lantern type cross surmounts an earlier circular
pedestal base of five steps. Correct as shown on OS 1:2500 1937.
Position as shown on field sheet and situated at SJ 84864598. (3)

No change. A tablet at the base of the column states that the present
cross was erected in 1820, replacing the medieval cross restored in
1575. Published 1:2500 survey correct. (4)
