More information : House of Dominican friars at Newcastle-Under Lyme. Founded before 1277 and dissolved in 1538. There were 20 friars here in 1277. (1)
The approximate site was pointed out to me at SJ84814575. (2)
Site of Priory now occupied by the cattle market. (3)
The history of the site is well documented. A t least part of the conventual buildings survived during the 18th century, but no traces remained above ground. When the adjacent cattle market was being laid out in 1870-71 remains of the foundations were exposed. In further excavations in 1881 skeletons and a gravestone were found. Problems arise regarding the boundary of the friary precinct in relation to the modern urban landscape. A likely site has been identified but cannot be verified without further investigation and the layout and form of the site cannot at present, be ascertained. On at least part of the site the friary may be covered by several feet of earth, and it is likely undisturbed. The site of the friary is at present beneath the modern ground surface. (4)
The site was occupied by a superstore by 2003. (5) |
