More information : (SJ 86642049) Haughton. "The rectory, the present house dating from just the end of the 18th century, was moated. (1) (SJ 86622048) Remains of a medieval homestead moat in the grounds of Haughton Rectory. With the exception of the northern arm and the northern corners, it is fairly well preserved as a dry ditch averaging 14m wide and 1m deep. The inner scarp survives around the north-western corner and along the western half of the north side but the remainder of the northern arm has been obliterated. There is a causeway, 9m wide, across the middle of the south side. The island, now occupied by the Rectory, is c 45m square. (2) Rectory demolished. Moat now built over. (3) (Name SJ 86592050) Moats (NR) (see also SJ 82 SE 12). (4) The rectory has been demolished and the moat filled in. The site has been developed with private housing. Published 1:2500 survey revised. (5) Earthworks in the (Haughton) Rectory garden may represent the circular fosse of an early post-Conquest motto (6), but listed as a doubtful castle site by Palliser. (6-7) SJ 86622048.
