Brereton Hall

Hob Uid: 74754
Location :
Cheshire East
Brereton
Grid Ref : SJ7813064850
Summary : Brereton Hall was built in 1585. It was altered in 1829 and in the late 19th century. In the mid 20th century it was a Girl's Grammar school until it closed in 1992. Since then it has been a private residence.Stone-dressed brick; leaded roof to front range and slate roofs to cross-wings. The present building suggests a reversed E plan. It is suggested that the great hall was demolished and replaced by an 1829 conservatory. Rear wall of front range opposite gateway is blank, with signs of rebuilding now giving onto metal conservatory.
More information : [SJ 78136485] Brereton Hall[G.T.] (School)[T.I.]. (1)

Brereton Hall, a 16th c. mansion, consists of one side of a
quadrangle and a portion of two others. The principal front has wings
terminating in gables and two lofty octagonal towers in the
centre, connected by a semicircular arch near the summit.

Over the doorway is the date '1586'. (2)

The towers have been taken down, and the mansion 'disparked'. (3)

The building, which is as described by Ormerod, is a good and
well preserved example of its period. The towers have not been
taken down. See GP AO/62/2/7.

The hall is used as a private school. (4)
