More information : [Area SJ 69598948]. A hospital, founded at Warburton in the 12th c and dissolved c.1200, became a priory of Premonstratensian canons which in turn was dissolved before 1271 (2). The field Abbey Croft, near the church is the site of the priory, although now no traces remain. (1 - 2) There is no trace of buildings. The area is grass-covered. (3) The field Abbey Croft SW of the church (SJ 68 NE 3) is arable; no trace of buildings or occupation debris was seen. (4) Some canons may have been at Warburton circa 1190, but there is no evidence to support the suggestion of authy 2 that the Premonstratensian cell superceded a hospital. The vill of Warburton was granted to the Premonstratensians, and there is no mention of a hospital. (5) |
