More information : A rectilinear ditch, visible on A.P.s, CPE, UK. 1935/4357-8 and 4461-2, is a possible moat. An annotated survey (at SJ 6506 5421), has been made. (1) Published survey (25" 1963) checked and found correct. (2)
SJ 6509 5422 (FCE), Earthworks at Reaseheath. The earthworks comprise a sub-rectangular ditched enclosure measuring approximately 53m north to south and 43m transversely, which has previously been categorised as a moat by authority 1. The southern arm has been destroyed. It seems unlikely that the enclosure ditch would have been very effective in holding water, and therefore the classification as a moat is somewhat tentative. Remains of a possible structure have been identified on the island. A large ditch-like feature to the north and east of the enclosure is a dried up stream course that has been artificially re-routed, probably in the nineteenth century. It defines an area of level ground to the north and east of the enclosure which has previously been interpreted as an annex associated with the enclosure (3a). This area was formerly covered in ridge and furrow (3b), although no trace of this now survives. The earthworks of the ditched enclosure are generally in poor condition. Previously surveyed in 1979 (3c) and the subject of an archaeological evaluation in 1992 (3d). This description is summarised from a detailed level 3 survey conducted in May 1994. Full information is available in the NMR Archive. (3)
