More information : SS 5569. Eddisbury, a possible Deserted Medieval Village, first mentioned in (1) the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of 914 AD as 'Eades byrig', an Iron-Age hillfort (SJ 56 NE 1) re-occupied in that year by Aethelflaed, a lady of the Mercians. It appears as 'Edesberie' in 1086 AD, became the capital of a hundred in the twelfth century, and was the chief lodge of the Royal Forest of Delamere (2 & 3. See SJ 56 NE 2). (1-3) No field evidence. (4)
The site of any settlement can probably be equated with the Aethelflaedan burh, which lay on Eddisbury Hill and is recorded as part of the Iron Age hillfort SJ 56 NE 1. |
