Wem Castle, built c1135-54, became a ruin by 1290, and was destroyed about 1460. By 1538, all that remained was the mound and ditch, and by 1750 the ditch has been filled up and the height of the mound reduced. The remains now consist of three parts of a 10 ft. high mound with a platform around the base, and a fragment of a ditch, 3 ft. deep on the south. (2-3)
Motte resurveyed at 1/2500. No trace of a bailey was found. (4)

SJ 51182882. The remains of a medieval motte castle, built between 1135 and 1154. Around the beginning of the 13th century, the original timber castle was rebuilt in stone but it was in ruins by 1290 and was rebuilt again in 1313. The castle was dismantled shortly after 1459. A brick retaining wall was built across the mound in the mid 19th century. The oval shaped motte now measures approximately 50 metres by 56 metres at its base, 28 metres by 35 metres across the top and stands nearly 3 metres high. Scheduled. (8) |
