More information : Centred at SJ 45537482 is an almost square enclosure formed by a ditch which appears to be a moat. The corners are slightly rounded. Approximately 60m square, the ditch has a maximum depth of 1.7m internally, and 1.5m externally. The original limits of the ditch are not clearly defined on the west side, where a field bank bounds the enclosure. The ditch on this side is marshy, but is watered by a modern drain which connects it with a pond on the NW side of the enclosure. The ditch is elsewhere dry, and very well defined except on the east side where the outer scarp is somewhat spread. On the N side there are traces of what appears to be a causeway across the ditch. No traces of internal habitation are visible. A 25" Survey has been made. (1) The feature is grass covered and is situated on level ground. The interior is a flat platform. There seems doubt that it is a Moat. Mr Boywer of Green Bank Farm, Elton, who formerly owned the field is an elderly gentleman. He said that when he was young, elderly inhabitants told him that they rememebered a house standing on the platform and that he himself had ploughed up, and removed square blocks of stone from the site. The field was without a name and he had never heard of name of the house. (2) No change since field reports of 15.7.59 and 20.7.59. Published 1:2500 survey still correct.
