More information : (NU 10161960) Tumulus (OE) Stone cist found. (1) In the wood to the west of Eglingham Hall is a large mound about 29 yards in diameter and tree planted. The mound was dug up during the lifetime of Major Ogle (died 1857) and many silver coins were found. Some of these were subsequently made into articles of plate which are now in the possession of the family. (2) A round barrow maximum diameter 33.0m and 3.2m high, with what looks like a separate mound on the top. This effect is created by a slight and irregular berm around the upper part formed partly by disturbance and partly by erosion around the roots of the large trees on the summit. There is no literary evidence to hand regarding the stone cist. The present owner of Eglingham Hall had no knowledge of the coins. (3) Condition unchanged. Published survey (25") revised. (4)
