Roman Altar [GT] (Site of) (2) Altar inscribed "NYMPHS ET FONTIBUS LEG. XX. V.V." found in 1821, in association with building debris, while digging at the eastern side of a sandpit, which is now known as the Cherry Grove and thought to mark the source of the legionary water supply. In 1870, two flagons and two cremation burials in Upchurch jars, were found. (3) [Name and sandpit shown on O.S.25" 1st Edn. 1875 (38.12)] A modern road occupies the site. The altar is preserved in a building at Eaton Hall. (4)
