Summary : Medieval churchyard cross in St Mary's churchyard, Tilston. The base is octagonal with two steps of dressed ashlar sandstone blocks and an octagonal base block into which is set an octagonal shaft 0.9m high. This is surmounted by an octagonal block with a sundial set into the top. The shaft is inscribed TB 1679 which is probably the date the the sundial was erected. The sundial is inscribed 'J Barker Jn Goff CW 1831' which represents the date the sundial face was restored. Scheduled.
More information : (SJ 4572 5057) SD (NAT) (1) Churchyard cross at Tilston consists of two octagonal steps, the lower one, 2.0m in diameter, with a total height of 0.3m, supports a broached octagonal base, 0.6m in diameter and 0.2m in height, with an octagonal shaft of 0.9m in height. An apparently later stone head carries a sundial and an inscription, in relief: RT and TR 1679. (2)
