More information : SJ 455483. A round barrow, 50 to 60ft. in diameter and approx. 6ft. high, was excavated by Mr.J.Blake of New HouseFarm, Shocklach, who discovered an oak plank at a depth of about 7ft, possibly part of a trunk coffin. It is suggested that the barrow covers an inhumation burial of E.B.A. date (1).
The barrow at SJ 45454834 is oval in shape, 20.0 m. E - W, and 16.0 m. N - S. This shape is probably due to ploughing. It is 1.5 m. high, and grass covered with no ditch. Surveyed at 1/2500 (2).
No change to field report of 10.1.69. Published survey (1:2500) correct (3).
SJ 4546 4834. Bowl barrow 250m SSE of Meadows Farm. Scheduled RSM No 22587 (4).
The Bronze Age bowl barrow was visible as an extant earthwork mound and surrounding ditch on lidar imagery and the latest 2010 aerial photography and was mapped as part of the Cheshire National Mapping Programme project. The barrow was approximately 18.9m in diameter and centred at SJ 4546 4834 and appears to have been respected by later medieval ridge and furrow ploughing (UID 1607976) (5-6). |
