More information : [Marginal] The cellars of Nos. 8 and 9, The Square, Shrewsbury, now used as wine vaults, are all that remain of the 13th century Shute's Place (corrupted, Shoplatch). Members of the Shute family held the office of bailiff in the 13th century, and the house was probably one of the earliest stone mansions built in Shrewsbury. Of the existing buildings on the site the oldest remains are a stone-canopied fireplace and timber-work, apparently early Tudor, at the rear of premises now used as printing offices. These formed part of the building erected by Thomas Wolley, vintner. Next, a Jacobean house, of which back rooms and attics remain and finally a frontage of Georgian times. Listed 2. as a house dated 1730 with rear portion earlier - 17th C. panelling and frieze. Modern shop fronts, extensive cellars said to be Medieval. Dated 1730 on 2 enriched rainwater heads and this part built by Thomas Wolley, but the rear part of the building is older. 3-storeys red brick. Tall parapet. 5 sash windows with keystones and aprons to 2nd floor. End quoins. Early C17 panelling and frieze. Good C18 staircase with 3 turned balusters to each step and Queen Anne type panelled drawing room with reeded pilasters. Fine C18 gilded pelmet with floral decoration and ovolo moulding. Modern shop fronts. Extensive cellars, part said to be Mediaeval, all that remains of the C13 "Shute's Place". Nos 1 to 10 (consec) including No 5A form a group. (4)
