More information : [SJ 4487 1787] Tumulus, on the north side of Fitz churchyard, destroyed c.1901, when burnt layers and fragments of burnt bones and charcoal were found. It had diameters of 100 ft. and 48 ft. at base and top respectively, and itwas about 11 ft. high. (1)
Tumulus demolished to cover school playground (Norman Motte). (2)
At SJ 44821788 are the remains of a badly mutilated artificial mound, with the playground of a disused School adjacent on it south-west. There is little doubt that it is the 'demolished' tumulus or Motte. Its NE side has been almost completely destroyed, and it has been cut through from NE to SW, but it can still be recognised as having once been a single large circular mound. The maximum height is 3.0 m. The remains are too mutilated for any classificiation to be made from inspection, but the dimensions given by Phillips and the situation (in a manorial village and close to a river) strongly suggest that it was a Motte and not a barrow. There is no trace of a bailey. Surveyed at 1/2500. (3) |
