The flat topped mound, now part of the churchyard may be assumed to be a castle mound. (2)
A mound 14ft in height, surrounded by a ditch 3 to 4ft deep. It stands partly within the churchyard and partly in a field, and has been badly mutilated by a wall and ditch passing across it. (3)
The castle of Stapleton-in-Legharness, "a fortress of very inconsiderable pretensions," was probably founded in the 12th century, and was in the custody of King John in AD 1207. (4)
SJ 47100445: Stapleton Castle Mound is now some 12' high, 20m across the flat top, and up to 35m across overall. It has been eroded on its SW side. The surrounding ditch has been filled in, and is represented only by a shallow hollow to the north, through which the church path passes. Published survey (25") revised. (5) SJ 471044.
