More information : [SJ 3930 6350] MOAT [GT] (1)
The moat is situated in a field at present under stubble, and
slopes have been mutilated by the plough. In the present state
the moat has an average width of 15.0m and a maximum depth of
1.5 m. The only trace of an entrance is on the south side where
the ditch is only 0.7 m. deep, possibly the remains of a causeway.
The moat is dry throughout its length. There is no visible
trace of any building within the enclosed area. (2)
The field report submitted by E. Geary is correct, except that
the moat is now grass covered and the causeway barely discernible.
A 25" survey has been made. (3)
As described. Published surveys (1/1,250:1959) and (1/2,500 1961)
correct. (4)
No change from the field reports of 11 11 54; and 14 8 59.
Published surveys (1:1250 and 1:2500) correct. (5)
The moat lies in improved pasture. It is rectangular, with overall
dimensions of 73m x 88m. The island is not raised above the
surrounding ground surface. There are no internal or external banks,
except on the SW side where a spread bank may have acted as a dam to
help retain water in the moat. The moat and island are overploughed
with ridge and furrow, but two low mounds survive on the island, one
of which an original feature. For full description see descriptive
text, survey plans, and other archive held in the NMR. (6)
Medieval moated site visible as earthworks on historic vertical photography and lidar imagery in the parish of Marlston-cum-Lache, centred at SJ 3930 6349. This is extant on the latest 2017 vertical photography and was mapped as part of the Cheshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping Project. (7)
