More information : (SJ 32222443) St. Winifred's Well (NR) (SJ 32212442) Old Chapel (NR). (1) St. Winifred's Well is said to commemorate the miracle of a well gushing forth where the body of St. Winifred rested on the way from Holywell to Holy Cross, Shrewsbury. The site now takes the form of a chamber containing basins for bathing in, surmounted by a timber-framed cottage known as the Well House. There is a stone to the right of the entrance to the bath inscribed 1635 which is probably the date of the well building. The Well House, however, which Hope maintains to have been a chapel, contains 14th century work and is said to have been erected by Margaret, wife of Henry VII. (2-5) St. Winifred's Well - no change. Published survey 25" correct. The small building to the west of the well is a shed, built mainly of red brick, but with large sandstone blocks in its foundations and lower courses which undoubtedly come from an earlier structure whose original form and extent are no longer apparent. See ground photographs. (6)
