Summary : Medieval motte surviving as an earthwork. This small motte is about 25 feet wide and 8 to 10 feet high. The monument is scheduled.
More information : (SJ 33631181) Motte (NR). (1) The "Beacon" at Bretchel is a very small motte with traces of a ditch,but none of a bailey. It is about 25 feet across its damaged top 8-10 feet high. (2) The motte is as described in authority 2, although all traces of a ditch have now gone. Published survey 25" correct. (3) SJ 3363 1181. Motte castle 200m south west of Bretchel. Scheduled (RSM) (4) The earthwork remains of a small motte described by the previous authorities which was seen centred at SJ 3363 1182 and mapped from aerial photographs. (5) Listed by Cathcart King. (6)
