Summary : Medieval ringwork and bailey castle surviving as an earthwork and alleged deserted settlement, extant in the 13th century.The earthworks were mapped from aerial photographs. The earthwork has been much reduced and now exists as an oval platform up to 1.7 metres high and some 34 metres in diameter by 27 metres transversely. There are faint traces of a surrounding ditch. A ringwork forming one of a group of castles guarding the Long Mountain - Breiddin gap. It measures about 110ft. by 90ft. with a scarp 6ft. high at the best. Most of the bank has gone, probably thrown down to fill up the ditch. (2)
The hamlet of Brerelawe which Eyton records in the 13th. century can be identified with the ring-work near Westbury Station. Fields surrounding the site on the tithe map of 1840 were called Briarleys, a name which has survived locally to the present day. No date can be given for the desertion of the settlement. (3)
This earthwork occupies a commanding position on the summit of a prominent knoll. It has been much reduced and now exists as an oval platform up to 1.7m in height and some 34.0m in diameter NW-SE by 27.0m transversely; there is the faintest trace of a surrounding ditch. Published 1:2500 revised. The surrounding ground is arable and no trace of the DMV survives. (4)

The earthwork remains of the Medieval ringwork and bailey described by the previous authorities was seen at SJ 3425 1077 and mapped from aerial photographs. The site was masked by trees enabling only a small part of the site to be mapped. (7) |
