Monument Number 66434

Hob Uid: 66434
Location :
Shropshire
Worthen with Shelve
Grid Ref : SJ3289002940
Summary : Small medieval ringwork situated on Whitsburn Hill comprising of an oval-shaped enclosure with a break to the north east, surrounded by a ditch. The site was seen as an earthwork mound and mapped from aerial photographs. Scheduled.
More information : A circular earthwork discovered during field investigation. Visible on OS AP's 70:401:163. Surveyed at 1:2500 at SJ 32840293.

The work measures 37.0m in diameter overall and comprises a low enclosing bank surrounded by a ditch 10.0m in width and 1.2m in depth. A break in the bank in the NE is possibly original.

The work is situated on a NW facing slope above a spring: there is evidence of a field system in the surrounding arable. In most respects it is similar to the series of ringworks covering what is termed the Breidden Gap. ie being rather motte-like in appearance but very low and with a dished top. (1)

Survey of 27-JUL-1971 still correct. (2)

The earthwork remains of a small ringwork described by the previous authorities and seen centred at SJ 3289 0294 was mapped from aerial photographs. The site appeared as an circular mound with a diameter of approximately 30m situated on a NW facing slope of Whitsburn Hill. (3-4)

SJ 3289 0294: Small Medival ringwork which may have principally been built to support a watchtower. The enclosure is oval in shape with an external ditch which is partly infilled and part waterlogged. A level building platform within the northern half of the interior probably supported the watchtower. Scheduled.(5)
