Summary : Medieval motte castle surviving as an earthwork and mapped from aerial photographs. The motte is 22 metres in diameter and encircled by a ditch. The motte is scheduled.
More information : (SJ 34430224) Castle Mound (NR). (1) The motte at Lady House is 10-11 feet high from the vestige of a ditch now 2 feet deep, and has a circular top of about 25 feet in diameter. There is no sign of a bailey, and probably there never was one. (2) The motte is as described in authority 2. The ditch remains on the north-west and south-west sides only. Published survey (25") revised. (3) SJ 3443 0224. Motte castle 100m south west of Lady House Farm. Scheduled (RSM). (4) The earthwork remains of the motte described by the previous authorities was seen at SJ 3443 1224 and mapped from aerial photographs. The motte mound measures approximately 22m in diamerer and has a ditch encircling the base of the mound. Immediately to the north of the motte are two fields of ridge and furrow centred at SJ 3443 0245 which may be associated with the site. (5-6) Listed by Cathcart King. (7)
