More information : [SE 98509392] Tumulus (NR) (1) A large barrow (round). 75 ft diameter, and 7 ft high was excavated by the Scarborough Arch Soc in 1949. It had been opened previously, with what result is not known, but from the fact that only a few scraps of a Food Vessel were found it seems likely that the main interment was removed. A kerb of rather small rounded stones probablyfrom the beach, surrounded the mound - radius of the kerb 31'. The core of the barrow was turf 23 ft radius and 4 ft 6 ins high. (2) Resurveyed at 1:2500. Description correct. (3) SE 986939. A round barrow, 86 ft in diameter and 5.5 ft high with a flat top, situated 100 yds NW of Kirkless Farm was partly excavated inthe SW quadrant by the Scarborough & Dist Arch Soc in April 1949. A kerb of stones encircling the mound was determined. A pit, 3 ft in diameter and 1.5 ft deep, cut into the old ground surface was situatedabout 4 ft NE of the centre of the barrow, but no finds were made during its careful excavation. A small fragment of calcined bone was found elsewhere, but no evidence of a cremation burial; it was possible that the primary burial had been deposited outside the limitsof the excavation. A jet pendant and small block of jet and few fragments of Bronze Age pottery were also recovered. On the limited evidence it was reasonably suggested that the barrow was built in the Middle Bronze Age, and that no significant addition or modification was made to its structure during later periods. No attempt was made to determine whether the barrow had been surrounded by a ditch. In the central depression, which was noted on top of the mound before excavation, were the much decayed bones of a sheep at a depth of about2 ft, but there was no evidence of disturbance below this depth.
